AS91933 (1.2) Coastal Research - 'Life is better at the Beach'
This internal assessment Exploring the environment using data is based on exploring beach environments. The assessment is designed for students to visit two local beaches where data can be collected, and observations made.
Included in this resource is a ‘Data and Observation Recording Booklet’ which is designed to assist kaiako and ākonga in the collection of data during a field trip. The booklet provides a range of templates and tables to record both natural and cultural data and observations at both beach environments. Additionally, two information sheets on data collecting techniques are provided to assist the ākonga. The entire booklet or selective parts can be used to suit the stated aim of the assessment.
The assessment is structured to ensure that ākonga can meet the requirements of the Standard. The tasks guide ākonga through collecting and presenting their data, explaining their findings and forming a conclusion, and explaining how the data strengthens and/or limits their understanding of the environment.
The assessment focuses on two beaches in Hawkes Bay (Te Matau-a-Māui). The study environment, including the region and beaches, is displayed in grey italic text. This formatting allows Kaiako to easily identify and make edits to align the environment with their school’s local context.
