Achievement Standard 91012 (1.6) 'Tsunami Warning and Response'
The events of 5th March 2021 put the spotlight on New Zealand’s preparedness for a tsunami. Our country’s location on the ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’ means it is prone to earthquakes and is also at risk from tsunamis. Since 1840 ten tsunamis (greater than 5m in height) have occurred in New Zealand. The tsunami warning and response is currently a significant issue in New Zealand.
"I'm quite frightened, I've got no idea if there's going to be a tsunami. It was massive.”
This internal achievement standard looks at the tsunami warning and response in New Zealand and its related issues - the nature of the issue, various viewpoints and possible courses of action
