Demonstrate geographic understanding of an urban pattern

This new internal achievement standard looks at the urban pattern of murder in Chicago – the spatial and temporal variations in the pattern of its location, exploring factors and circumstances that contribute to this pattern which may include ethnicity, gangs, gentrification and social issues.

This resource will help students to develop an understanding of Burgess’s Concentric Model and its original intent, how gentrification has impacted on ethnic groups, ghettos and Gang turf and look at crime statistics for the city districts. Activities make connections to London and New Zealand crime.

Many of the resource activities have a skills based component, with the drawing, analysis and comparison of graphs and maps.

NEW internal Achievement Standard 91245 (2.6) ‘Affluenza – Are You Immune?’

This internal achievement standard looks at the Level 2 contemporary geographic issue of Affluenza – the issue, the various viewpoints, evaluating courses of action and making a justified recommendation.

It investigates the issue of affluenza – a major focus within New Zealand. Affluenza is a combination of the terms influenza and affluent.  Sometimes it is referred to as a condition that afflicts the rich, young and idle who may feel lethargic and disconnected from society, even when they engage in aggressive spending. Nothing quite seems to satisfy or make such people happy…

Internal Unit Standard 11083 (L2) ‘The Constant Gardener’

  • Report on a work of fiction from a geographic perspective
  • This unit standard complements very well with Level 2 AS91242 ‘Demonstrate geographic understanding of differences in development’ and in particular ways in which cultural factors contribute to disparities with the focus on health, government systems, political stability and multinationals
  • This would combine well with the global topic AS91246 ‘Stopping a Global Killer’ which focuses on Malaria so students become familiar with the issue of Diseases in LEDC countries particularly those of Africa
